On August 1st numerous fantastic Colorado Front Range musicians will join forces in Boulder to celebrate what would be Jerry Garcia’s 76th birthday. This show billed: "Garcia Through The Years" will feature much of Jerry’s musical offerings, including acoustic Garcia material, Jerry Garcia Band, and the Grateful Dead.
Taking place in Ninilchik, Alaska, on the beautiful Kenai Peninsula, August 3rd-5th, Salmonfest showcases the unique Alaskan music scene, along with the likes of Michael Franti & Spearhead, Fruition, and Brandi Carlile. Featuring some of Alaska’s top bands, such as Hope Social Club, with Melissa Mitchell, and Blackwater Railroad Company, Salmonfest offers a pristine environment for musicians to come together and mix it up for fish. The 6th annual Spread The Word Festival, showcased some of Colorado’s most diverse and eclectic talent, spanning from ferociously fast picking and heavy-hitting bass decibels, to smooth funky jams and everything in between. Spread across five stages, Denver’s Fox Street Compound morphed into a psychedelic playground for fans to enjoy artists, food trucks and tunes galore.
Grateful Web recently had the chance to speak with keyboardist and producer Chad Staehly. He’s a member of the rock’n’roll roots group Hard Working Americans. Featuring some of the most established talents in American music including vocalist/guitarist Todd Snider, guitarists Neal Casal and Jesse Aycock, bassist Dave Schools, and drummer Duane Trucks, the band which began as a group project has grown into their own after four years of touring and recording.
Let me just say, “Dr. Feel Good’s Traveling Medicine Show” by Great American Taxi sounds just like what I would expect from such a band performing an album with such a name. This is not to say that the album is bad or bland—very far from it—but that this is a “feel good” show that brings together the best elements of what a traveling show might be. And it’s quite the adventure.

We live in a time where plenty of incredibly entertaining funk acts with talented players are saturating the live music scene. Funk has almost become synonymous in meaning to being just a good times band with some soul. Digging back toward the true roots of the genre reveals a particular form and structure with certain places breading their own unique spin and history on it. New Orleans musicians are held in a high caliber for a reason. They don’t just learn to play in their own niche group; these stellar players are constantly collaborating and have been for decades.
The line-up of great bands and artists has been expanded for the 4th Annual John Hartford Memorial Festival, taking place May 29-31, 2014 at the Bill Monroe Music Park and Campground in Bean Blossom, IN.
